Our society has become more self-centered than in any other time in our history. We are advised by the media, friends, relatives and co-workers to think about ourselves and to make ourselves happy. Most people can take this in perspective and also think of others in their quest for happiness, others do not. As a result our society in general is becoming more violent and families are splitting apart through divorce rather than working things through. I was very fortunate to find a partner for life that I am able to compromise with and who is willing to compromise with me. My husband and I have been married for twenty five years and I know that we will stay married until one of us passes away. We take our wedding vows seriously and consistently work on the health of our marriage. We also go out of our way to support other couples maintain their marriages. We make a big deal out of wedding anniversaries. We are also ways looking for wedding anniversary presents that we can have on hand to give to our friends and relatives on their special day. Not every couple celebrates their anniversary, but we strongly believe they should. In a society where divorce is the norm it is important to recognize that you are still working on the commitment you made to each other. We are not wealthy people so we do not give elaborate wedding anniversary presents. We try to find affordable things that we know the couple enjoys. We have given free babysitting as a wedding anniversary present so the couple can go out for an evening. For our friends that enjoy wine we will give them a bottle of wine that we know they enjoy. Our main purpose is not the actual wedding anniversary presents, it is acknowledging that the couples are working on their relationship and letting them know that we value this. We were talking to our priest about this and he agreed that there is not a lot of recognition given to couples that stay together. He went through the parish directory and made not of all the couples that have wedding anniversaries for each month. He publishes the dates and the couple’s names during the month of the anniversary. We also pray each week for the couples that are celebrating their anniversary. I think this is a great way for all of us to keep our wedding vows close to our heart as well as our brain when we are making day-to-day decisions. It keeps us from being too self centered.

Just as a chemist isolates a substance from contaminations that distort his view of its nature and effects, so the work of art purifies significant appearance. It presents abstract themes in their generality, but not reduced to diagrams.
