I remember visiting my cousin when I was a teenager. She was often the one that told me about the things I should be doing. She gave me my first bra, and she would often give me clothes that were more up to date than the ones I had. I don’t think my mom was a slacker in any department, but I do think she was in no hurry to see me grow up too fast. My cousin introduced me to a lot of things, and nothing she did surprised me, until the day she said that she was going to go to school to become a model. I thought she had lost her mind when she said that.
She had gotten a pamphlet in the mail that told her that she could be become a model. I was honesty shocked that she was even thinking about this. It wasn’t that she wasn’t pretty; it was just that she was short, and we lived so far from anywhere. I couldn’t imagine how she thought she was going to become a model when she was many years from being able to move anywhere where she might find work.

At the utmost, the active-minded young man should ask of his teacher only mastery of his tools. The young man himself, the subject of education, is a certain form of energy; the object to be gained is economy of his force; the training is partly the clearing away of obstacles, partly the direct application of effort. Once acquired, the tools and models may be thrown away.

She told me there was a school that teaches you how to become a model. I wasn’t sure how this would work, and I wasn’t sure if there was anything to it. They had accepted her sight unseen, and I wondered if it wasn’t just a money making scheme of some sort. The fact is that not everyone can become a model, though there are many other types of modeling than the runway and magazine models you might think of first. Still, it seemed so shady to me.
She never ended up going to the school that promised she could become a model after all. I don’t know what changed her mind, but I think it might have been her mother. She always wanted her daughter to follow her dreams, but I think she may have said that if she wants to become a model that she might need to wait until she was at least out of high school before she even thought about it. In the end my cousin went to school and became a teacher. I guess it was just a passing fancy for her, but wasn’t something that she really felt she needed to do. Perhaps we all have that passing thought sometime during childhood, but many, just like my cousin, forget all about it.
