Knowing what to do in an emergency is sometimes vital. When an emergency strikes, there is usually very little time to think. Most emergency workers and doctors will tell you that often they simply act. Their training and instinct can help them effectively do their job and save lives. Although not everyone is trained to the extent of these individuals, having a medical game plan in case of an emergency is a great idea for every family. If your family members have special medical conditions, it can be even more important. After all, being prepared is the best way to get through an emergency.
Medications
If you or a family member takes a daily medication that is necessary for their health, you should make it a rule to get refills at least one week before the medication runs out. If you follow this rule, you can be sure that no matter if you get snowed in, the medication will at least be there for a week. A week is usually plenty of time for someone to rescue you, or for the situation outdoors to change. Waiting until the last minute for vital medications is never a good idea.
Equipment
When someone in your household is on medical equipment of some sort, it is important to know how the equipment works. Part of knowing how it works is to know what to do if the electricity fails. If you know the equipment has a backup battery, you should keep a small stash of them handy and know how to operate the equipment via the battery. If you are unsure about how to use the equipment with a battery alone, make an urgent appointment with your doctor or equipment technician to get educated on the subject.
Training
Part of a good medical plan includes proper training. Although some people do know CPR and other basic medical practices, there are many who have no idea what to do in an emergency situation. There should be at least two people in every home that has been trained in basic emergency care however. You can take classes at various locations in your area, with many of them being free. Some employers even pay for their employees to take first aid courses. If you are given the opportunity to take a class in CPR or other basic emergency situations, take advantage! It could be very helpful in case of disaster.

Emergency Lists
When a medical emergency strikes, it is sometime difficult to think strait. You can help yourself stay calm by posting lists in your home that note important phone numbers. These numbers can include your doctor, hospital, emergency number, police, fire, or family members. Although you think you would never have trouble remembering these numbers, it can happen. When people experience medical emergencies they often panic. When the human body goes into panic mode, it often loses memory capability. Even the simplest numbers may completely slip your mind. Having a list right next to the phone will help you know that no matter what, you will be able to contact the correct people.
Response Products
If you have a family member that may not be capable of getting to a phone in an emergency, strongly consider adding a response product to your medical plan. These items are often worn around the person's neck and automatically call emergency personnel if trouble is suspected. These items are perfect for elderly family members or disabled members as well. You can find them at general merchandise stores, medical supply stores, or through your doctor. They can be a smart addition to any medical emergency plan.
Being responsible and creating a medical plan for emergencies is a wise move. When everyone is on the same page, emergencies can go a lot smoother. When you are dealing with individuals that need medications, medical equipment, or specialized care, it is most important to be prepared. By being prepared, you can ensure that you have done all you can to help create a safe environment for you and your family. So, sit down with your family and come up with a basic plan together today. You will feel better knowing that you have taken the time and effort to devise a system in case of an emergency.
