I started off taking a computer training course because I thought it would be a useful thing for me to do. You see, unlike most people my generation, I am completely clueless around computers – or at least I was before the computer course. Most of my friends grew up with PCs in the house, but not me. I lived way out in farm country and, until I was 15 years old, I never used anything more high-tech than a typewriter. Even when I finally got a computer, I never used it very much. It seemed unintuitive to me, whereas the typewriter made sense.
Unfortunately, being a writer, not knowing my way around computer was becoming a lot of trouble. That is why I decided to take a computer course. There was a local vocational school that offered computer courses, and I thought I'd try it out. I expected to hate it. For me, using a computer had always been so frustrating that I couldn't even imagine finding it to be a fun activity. When I did, it surprised me.

The first few lessons were kind of boring. They covered the basics of navigating Windows, turning the computer on and off, saving and loading files, and stuff like that. Soon, however, it got interesting. By the end of the computer course, we were actually learning how to program Flash animation. This is becoming more and more of a standard part of introductory computer courses. Knowing a little bit of flash and HTML is pretty useful nowadays, and we definitely learned a bit. Although it didn't motivate me to get into computer careers, it did make me want to think more about using the computer as a hobby.
People who knew me when I was a kid are surprised when I tell them that computer programming is now one of my favorite things to do. I'm not serious about it. I will never get involved in computer careers. It is simply something I enjoy doing on the side. Having a good hobby is fun, and having one that engages your brain is even better. I have always been into woodworking, playing music, and stuff like that – stuff that is very hands-on. Doing something as intellectual as computer programming is a nice switch. I've even thought about taking another computer course. I think next semester, I'm going to take an advanced programming class. I can hardly wait.
