Computer Careers

I never really thought about computer careers until my second year in college. I was actually taking a computer course for fun. I thought it would be interesting to try out programming. So many of my friends went in to it, and I wanted to see what it was like to be a coder. I went to a big school for computer science careers. It was during the dotcom boom, so a lot of people were getting into the whole programming thing. Most of them were in it for the money, but some of the people there were really passionate about the work as well.

I definitely fell into the latter category. As soon as I got my hands on a computer programming course, I couldn't get enough of it. I couldn't believe that you could actually have a computer career! Spending all your time coding seemed like heaven to me, and the more I thought about it, the more it seemed like a great career path. I had always thought the computer careers would be boring, but once I got into the problem-solving of it, it got to be a lot of fun. It taught me how to think logically, and it was always really gratifying when I finished a program.

 Historical Quote
The analogy between the mind and a computer fails for many reasons. The brain is constructed by principles that assure diversity and degeneracy. Unlike a computer, it has no replicative memory. It is historical and value driven. It forms categories by internal criteria and by constraints acting at many scales, not by means of a syntactically constructed program. The world with which the brain interacts is not unequivocally made up of classical categories.
—Gerald M. Edelman (b. 1928)

Of course, there are many other kinds of computer careers. I chose a computer science career, but a lot of my friends were in to the hardware aspects of it more than the software. For them, computer engineering careers were the way to go. As a matter of fact, nowadays computer engineering is an even more lucrative career fields that computer science. So may people are computer programmers that it is getting a little bit saturated. You can still find a job, but it is harder than it used to be.

Then again, you can have a computer career without a lot of schooling. A lot of computer careers start with simple tech jobs. The people who install your cable modem, for example, often move on to bigger and better things. It is just a matter of time, work, and a few computer courses. You can start anywhere, and the sky is the limit. Technology keeps growing and growing, and if you can ride it, you can find a lot of success and money. It might not be for you, but it is definitely at least worth thinking about.
